Daisaku Ikeda was born in Tokyo in 1928 and worked at a steelworks while studying at Tokyo Fuji University. At the age of 19, he encountered the organization that would become Soka Gakkai and began his activities. In 1951, Josei Toda became the second president, and Ikeda rose to prominence as his right-hand man. [00:50] [Strong Arms and Expansion Strategy] As Chief of Staff of the Youth Division, Ikeda promoted aggressive recruitment and political advancement, contributing to the expansion of Soka Gakkai's influence. After becoming its third president in 1960, he strengthened the ties between religion and politics through overseas expansion and the founding of the Komeito Party. At the same time, the concentration of power within the Seikyo Shimbun and within the Gakkai itself led to growing criticism. [05:52] [Sect War] The conflict between Ikeda and Nichiren Shoshu is known as the "Sect War." Ikeda plotted to gain control of Nichiren Shoshu, and internal reports revealed the details of his plan. Ultimately, in 1991, Nichiren Shoshu excommunicated Soka Gakkai, marking a complete break between the two. This conflict had a significant impact on believers and the local economy. [09:04] [Increasing Deification] After his excommunication, Ikeda set out to deify himself. Stories of Ikeda's superhuman worship spread among his followers. He also strengthened the education of his followers by receiving honorary doctorates and establishing Soka Gakkai schools. This process strengthened Ikeda's personal authority and established a dictatorial system within the Soka Gakkai. [22:23] [Shadow] In the 2000s, Ikeda's public appearances decreased, and rumors of his health and death began to circulate. With his death on November 15, 2023, at the age of 95, questions remain about how the Soka Gakkai will consolidate and pass on his legacy to future generations. Attention is also focused on how the deified Ikeda image will affect the organization's current state and its relationship with society. [25:47]
