Comparison: The Misjudged Villain | Tran Thai An (Anna) Le | TEDxKelowna Youth
Many of us are taught that comparison is harmful, but what if it isn’t actually the problem? Anna explores how comparison is often labeled as something that steals joy and motivation, when in reality it can also drive growth. Drawing from both Asian and Western learning cultures, she shares how comparison has shaped her experience as both pressure and motivation, and argues that it only becomes limiting when it defines identity instead of guiding growth. My name is Lê Trần Thái An and you can call me Anna Le. I was born in Huế, Vietnam, and later moved to British Columbia, Canada, where I am currently a Grade 11 student at Rutland Senior Secondary. Growing up between two cultures has broadened my perspective and shaped how I perceive challenges such as identity, comparison, and motivation. As a student who has experienced both Asian and Western educational environments, I have learned that comparison is something we all encounter, but its impact varies depending on interpretation. In either way, it does not define “who I am”; instead, it guides growth. As a TEDxYouth Kelowna speaker, I share a personal story, introduce a fresh perspective on comparison, and to spark curiosity about how it can guide growth for people at different stages of life. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
