A 9.8 horsepower motor is enough to plane a 250 kg boat. Under ideal conditions, 300 horsepower would be possible, but where and when have such conditions been found? The 9.8 hp is a 170 cc outboard motor weighing 26 kg, which is a high-performance version of the 8 hp motor. Initially, there were only two engines of this power: the Yamaha 9.8 and the Tohatsu 9.8. Everything else is usually a copy of these engines, made in China under the brands Sea-pro, Hidea, HDX, and others. In Japan, these motors are still produced by Yamaha and Tohatsu, but... the Tohatsu plant produces one motor under three brands: the Mercury 9.9 Light, Tohatsu 9.8, and Nissan Marine 9.8. It doesn't matter which of the three you choose; they're completely identical, the only difference being the lettering on the cover and possibly the price (marketing strategy). 9.9 hp outboard motors are factory-stripped, 15-horsepower engines with a displacement of around 240 cc and weighing between 38 and 41 kg, depending on the brand and configuration. They're strangled in various ways—by limiting the throttle travel, limiting the valve lift, or by installing a smaller-diameter spacer between the carburetor and the block. Chinese copies are also plentiful, and the Chinese ones almost always come factory-strangled. If you're buying a genuine Japanese 9.9 with the intention of strangling it, check exactly how it's strangled. I preferred the 9.8 because of its light weight and sufficient power. I bought the Mercury 9.9 light because it was available. If I had a Toha or a Nissan, I would take any of the three, since they are the same.
