Suspended solids- microorganisms and non-biodegradable suspended matter. Measurement unit- milligram per liter (mg/L). Importance- To ensure that there is a sufficient quantity of active biomass available to consume the feed quantity of organic matter at any time; the food to microorganism (F: M) ratio. Good F: M ratio- The biomass will consume high percentages of the food means, more biomass- more consumption of organic matter (BOD). 2 mg/L BOD or lower, is considered to be clean, and safe to discharge to surface waters or to reuse. The total weight of MLSS in an aeration tank = MLSS (kg/m3) x aeration tank volume (m3). MIXED LIQUOR VOLATILE SUSPENDED SOLIDS The Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids (MLVSS) is the part of the MLSS which is actually digesting the organic matter (COD & BOD). The volatile solids concentration or MLVSS is can be used to determine whether there are enough microorganisms present in the aeration tank to purify the water. HOW MUCH MLSS TO BE MAINTAINED IN AERATION TANKS? Factors that affect the concentration of MLSS: The MLSS will vary based on the sludge age, nature of wastewater (BOD/COD value), incoming solids, ambient conditions, and the size of the aeration tank. Desirable range: MLSS around 3,000 mg/l and SVI = 100 to 200 ml/g  Produces clear and good-quality effluent i.e. sludge forms a uniform blanket and captures more particles before settling. SVI = 80 ml/g or less  Rapid settling characteristics. TSS & MLSS will be higher. (MLSS would be around 4000 mg/l). SVI = 250 ml/g or higher  Cause poor settling and poor compaction of settled sludge (filamentous sludge bulking as well). MLSS would be around 1000 mg/L. RATIO OF MLVSS & MLSS The ratio of MLVSS/MLSS should be greater than 0.75 in a conventional wastewater treatment system.
