In the mid-1980s, Nissan took a bold step: building a Japanese supercar capable of competing with the best European cars. Thus was born the MID4: a mid-engine concept with all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering (HICAS), and a three-liter engine. Later, a Type II version appeared with a 330-horsepower VG30DETT twin-turbo engine, visually foreshadowing the Honda NSX. But the car never reached production, its prohibitive cost scuppered it. However, the MID4 didn't disappear without a trace. Its technologies became the source material for future legends: the turbo engine migrated under the hood of the 300ZX, the all-wheel steering system went into production, and the signature all-wheel drive evolved into the famous ATTESA, which made the Skyline GT-R R32 an unstoppable "Godzilla."
