Gold Coast Mansions on Long Island | Treasures of New York

Enormous mansions of Long Island's North Shore, nicknamed the Gold Coast, once represented America's largest concentration of wealth. From 1890 to 1930, the richest New Yorkers hired leading architects and landscape designers to build estates within 40 miles of New York City. At Oheka Castle, Planting Fields and Old Westbury Gardens, cost was no obstacle. Some families only kept the house for one generation.
