Drawing on both the precise language of the Iliad and external evidence from Hittite archives, Nagy shows that therapōn means not just "attendant" but "ritual substitute," the one who dies in another's place, and traces how this concept plays out as Patroklos takes on Achilles' armor, his epithet, and ultimately his fate at the hands of Hector.
