Public Domain | A Beautiful Struggle with Billy Gauthier

KWAG has produced six short documentary videos titled Public Domain. Each video introduces an artist whose work is in the Gallery's Permanent Collection. This video shares insight into the renowned sculptor Billy Gauthier's arts practice. As an artist and activist of Inuit ancestry, Gauthier’s inspiration comes directly from an intimate connection with the land and culture of his home in North West River, Labrador. For decades, Gauthier has developed his artistic practice into a complex, detailed and vibrantly dynamic body of work. His sculptures are a means to share stories and life experiences. Gauthier explains: “My core belief is Inuit and our lands are synonymous: when our Nunangat is harmed, we become harmed and when our Nunangat heals, we begin to heal. I understand my work as a form of activism, carrying messages about the importance of caring for our land, animals, and resources.” Public Domain engages with the power of art to connect people and to build more resilient communities, within the region and beyond. Billy Gauthier: Sila is now available to order online. This publication coincides with the first mid-career survey of the renowned sculptor, held at Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery in 2024, showcasing Gauthier’s distinct artistic vision. KWAG Public Domain is supported by the City of Waterloo, the Elizabeth L. Gordon Art Program, the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, and The Gamble Family. Visit kwag.ca for more information.
