Behind a collapsed stove and a false wall — a hidden room nobody had touched for decades. The house sat at number 13-115 by a stream, overgrown and peeling — beautiful in its own broken way. The moment I stepped through the door, time stopped. A carved wooden wardrobe still holding clothes. A vintage sewing machine table with the original handle. An icon in the corner wrapped in an embroidered cloth. Stained glass windows with patterns nobody makes anymore. Every drawer, every shelf had something left behind — as if the owners simply walked out one day and never came back. Then I found it. Behind the destroyed stove, past the collapsed tiles and rubble — a false wall. And behind the false wall, a room. Sealed off. Hidden. I lit it up with my flashlight and couldn't believe what I was looking at. A jar full of buttons with something that looked like gold mixed in. Beads that might be turquoise. A kerosene lamp that still works. Dishes for a table of twenty. And on the wall — a portrait staring straight back at me. The floor was rotting through. The ceiling had already come down in places. Plants were growing up between the floorboards. But I stayed.
