Aktobe is facing a new road scandal. On a stretch of Ualikhanov Street between Zhankozha Batyr and Aiteke Bi Streets, a contractor is using river pebbles as the base for a future sidewalk instead of the usual crushed stone. This technology has raised questions among activists, who believe that this material may not meet regulations and may contain toxic chemicals. A new sidewalk was laid here this month. Work has now been halted due to rain. However, this pause allowed activists to carefully examine the base of the future pedestrian walkway. Instead of crushed stone, they discovered a layer of river pebbles. According to activist Alexander Mandrykin, this substitution raises several serious questions, from compliance with construction standards to the origin of the material itself. Environmental activists from the "Aktobe, Breathe" movement have already been notified of the situation. If the pebbles were collected from the banks of the Ilek River, they are likely to be contaminated with high levels of hexavalent chromium, an extremely toxic chemical. Furthermore, pebbles are essential for the rivers themselves, as they act as a filter, and removing them from their natural environment is dangerous for the environment. There are also questions about the economics of the repairs. If the project called for the purchase of crushed stone, but freely mined river pebbles were actually used, then regulatory authorities need to verify that the work performed complies with the approved estimate. The city administration denied the pebbles and stated that a sand and gravel mixture was used for this sidewalk. After laying it, a layer of crushed stone will be laid, followed by a layer of screenings, and finally paving stones.
