The 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami (known as 27F) was an earthquake that occurred at 03:34:08 local time (UTC-3) on Saturday, February 27, 2010, reaching a magnitude of 8.8 on the MW scale. The epicenter was located in the Chilean Sea, off the coast of what was then the Biobío Region (now the Ñuble Region), approximately 150 kilometers northwest of Concepción and 63 kilometers southwest of Cauquenes, at a depth of 30.1 kilometers below the Earth's surface. The earthquake lasted a maximum of 4 minutes in areas near the epicenter, and more than 2 minutes in Santiago, Chile. It was felt with varying intensities across much of the Southern Cone, as far east as Buenos Aires and São Paulo. The affected regions (from north to south) were Valparaíso, the Santiago Metropolitan Region, O'Higgins, Maule, Biobío, and La Araucanía, which together have more than 13 million inhabitants, nearly 80% of the country's population. In the Maule and Biobío regions, the earthquake reached an intensity of IX on the Mercalli scale, devastating significant parts of cities such as Constitución, Concepción, Pelluhue, Curanipe, Iloca, Cobquecura, and the port of Talcahuano. Much of the city centers of Curicó and Talca collapsed, and the old buildings in their historic districts were completely destroyed. In the La Araucanía, O'Higgins, and Metropolitan regions, the earthquake reached an intensity of VIII, causing destruction in Santiago, Rancagua, and rural areas. The death toll reached 525. Nearly 500,000 homes suffered severe damage, and an estimated 2 million people were affected in the worst natural disaster to hit Chile since 1960. President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of constitutional emergency due to catastrophe" in the Maule and Biobío regions. A powerful tsunami struck the Chilean coast as a result of the earthquake, destroying several towns already devastated by the quake. Due to errors and indecisiveness on the part of the agencies responsible for issuing tsunami warnings, the population was not alerted to the event, which occurred 35 minutes after the earthquake. A video has become famous showing President Michelle Bachelet calling for calm and dismissing the existence of a tsunami, precisely when more than 100 Chileans were dying from the tsunami. The Juan Fernández archipelago, despite not feeling the earthquake, was struck by the violent tsunami, which wiped out its only town, San Juan Bautista. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific Ocean just minutes after the earthquake. This warning was subsequently extended to 53 countries located along much of its basin, reaching Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Antarctica, New Zealand, French Polynesia, and the Hawaiian Islands. The earthquake is considered the second strongest in the country's history and the eighth strongest ever recorded by humankind. It is surpassed nationally only by the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, the largest ever recorded by seismometers. The Chilean earthquake was 31 times stronger and released approximately 178 times more energy than the devastating Haiti earthquake the previous month, with the energy released being equivalent to nearly 800,000 atomic bombs, like the one dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.
