The feed phosphate plant in Rüdersdorf, in the Tasdorf district, belonged to the VEB Chemiewerk Coswig (Coswig Chemical Works). The chemical plant, with its four production units, was integrated into the newly formed VEB Kombinat Agrochemie Piesteritz (Piesteritz Agrochemical Combine) in 1979. At the Rüdersdorf site, the feed phosphate "Rükana" (hydrothermal defluorination of a mixture of raw phosphate, phosphoric acid, and soda) was produced until the end of 1999. Of the original 500 employees, only twelve remained at the end. In early 2000, insolvency proceedings were initiated for the company, and it has been permanently closed ever since. The plant was overshadowed by an environmental scandal in 2000. One of Brandenburg's largest environmental scandals was apparently uncovered on the grounds of the former feed phosphate plant in Rüdersdorf (Märkisch-Oderland). Approximately 80 barrels of oil and oily liquids were stored directly on the site next to the museum park. The windows of the fully equipped chemistry labs were smashed, the doors stood wide open, chemicals were spilled on the floor, and the shelves were filled with containers of highly toxic substances: nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. Some of the containers, holding up to one hundred liters, were leaking. Some of the contents were running uncontrolled down the drains. After years of vacancy, the site is now a sought-after haven for film and photography enthusiasts. The Stalingrad movie "Enemy at the Gates" was filmed here. Rammstein also shot their video for the song "Amerika" here. The site was also used as a filming location for "The Monuments Men," starring George Clooney. The film is based on a true story that took place at the end of World War II. It tells the story of an extraordinary treasure hunt. Art historians and museum curators try to secure as many art treasures as possible to protect them from destruction by Hitler. Their greatest enemy is time.
