In this incredible meteorite hunting and recovery video, Mark Dayton from Brass Medic documents the discovery of a large meteorite from the August 13, 2022 daytime meteor event that exploded over Utah’s Great Salt Lake. This rare daylight fireball was captured on multiple cameras, witnessed by thousands across the Salt Lake City region, and followed by a powerful sonic boom heard for miles. The incoming meteor was tracked before impact by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observation Program, traveling through space at an estimated 33,000 mph and weighing roughly 800 pounds before entering Earth’s atmosphere. As it hit the atmosphere, it slowed, fragmented, and broke apart over the desert west of Salt Lake City. Mark takes you along on a real-time meteorite recovery expedition near the Great Salt Lake, where he makes the discovery of a lifetime: a fresh 484 gram meteorite recovered live on camera. No metal detector was needed. The jet-black fusion-crusted stone stood out against the white and tan desert playa, a classic sign of a newly fallen meteorite. In total, 16 meteorite fragments were recovered from this historic fall by meteorite hunters from around the country.
