"New Front Shocks" - replacement damper fitment - PROJECT: L200
Our 2003 Mitsubishi L200 pickup needs some love and attention, with bags of enthusiasm, but little talent, let’s see if these are home mechanic jobs or are we as incompetent as we think we are . It is taken off road, but the shocks, leaf springs and other bits are looking tired and as we love “Murdock” Mitsubishi, we want to do it ourselves, plus, we will literally save over a thousand euros in garage costs. Let us show you how easy or hard these tasks are to perform, warts and all! – if we can do it, you can too, you can, we even make the easy ones tough!! It’s new shocks and leaf spring time, so new Terrafirma shocks will be fitted, Milner Leaf Springs to complete that overhaul - the old dampers were "shocking" or totally knackered is a more correct term! The centre prop shaft bearing as given up, so the prop shaft is coming off, so all the joints will be removed and replaced as we have gone in that far anyway - not all goes quite to plan, the signs of problems were there, we clearly ignored them and suffer the consequences. Some tasty orange silicon bushings will give the sway bar a new lease of life and whilst we are at it, the brakes look awful, so full calliper rebuild will happen after a sandblast and powder coat. The bushing are so simple to replace, only two idiots could struggle - you know what happens ! Quite a few of the removed parts do not cut the mustard, so they get the choice of sandblast and powder coat – Hammerite or Raptor – so see all three processes in action. We discover other issues and maybe more as we dive in to this project. Once the outside is done, some vinyl wrap on the dash, new stereo and a dam good detail with transform the old interior. Road testing before and after will show if the new shocks really perform and if these new parts were worth bothering to do. Finally after a little off roading to test – a paint detail to clear some (doubt all) of the many scratches from dragging Murdock through trees and bushes. Subscribe, as we want you to join this journey, advice gratefully received and criticism digested over coffee. Remember, we are not mechanics, nor do we pretend to be – so most of this is a first try for us, so you will see genuinely how tough or easy these jobs really are.
