5 REASONS YOGA TEACHERS NEED BETTER ANATOMY TRAINING
Yoga teachers desperately need better anatomy and physiology training in their yoga teacher trainings. Most YTT's have a very limited education on anatomy and physiology, and they spend most of it memorizing bones and muscles, and over-emphasizing yoga pose alignment instead of learning more important concepts of exercise science, pain science, and physiology. Wouldn't it be great if yoga teachers understood basic cell biology, how the nervous system works and how it relates to breathing (pranayama) and meditation for parasympathetic responses? Why aren't yoga teachers taught the basics of how glands and the endocrine system work, so that they would be less inclined to believe in health fads and pseudoscientific claims about the human body? Yoga teacher trainings are inadequate to teach yoga teachers about anatomy, biomechanics, and movement sciences. They come out of YTT knowing a little but feeling like they know a lot, and they go way outside their scope of practice (they don't even have a scope of practice...) and give their yoga students bad health information. If yoga teachers had better education, it would not only help them, but their students as well. . .
