His inspirations for the story, apart from the Mythos, were George MacDonald-Fraser, G.K. Chesterton, and Raymond Chandler. An excellent biography of the real von Ungern-Sternberg is The Bloody White Baron, by James Palmer - he was far more bonkers and unsavoury than even this story implies (The Baron, not James Palmer). This was Tamlan's first published short story, but he is a keen creator of Call of Cthulhu, the tabletop roleplaying game.
