A drug developed from a protein extracted from the human placenta was presented this Tuesday (9) in São Paulo (SP) and could represent a historic breakthrough in the treatment of spinal cord injuries. Named polylaminin, the drug is the result of 25 years of research led by biologist Tatiana Coelho de Sampaio, a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). According to the researchers, polylaminin has the ability to stimulate mature neurons to rejuvenate and create new axons, structures responsible for carrying electrical impulses throughout the body.
