Authorities in Northern California are investigating one of the most disturbing animal welfare cases in recent memory. Investigators excavated the property of a self-described "no-kill" rescue and uncovered the remains of 117 dogs, along with 21 canine skulls, hundreds of bones, and more than 600 dog collars. Preliminary forensic findings indicate that many of the dogs suffered gunshot wounds. Investigators are also working to identify dogs through recovered microchips. The investigation has expanded beyond the graves themselves. Authorities are reviewing shelter records, financial documents, adoption paperwork, and transfer records after concerns were raised about hundreds of dogs that may be unaccounted for.
