JAPADA: Bringing My Family Home to Discover Our Ekiti Heritage
What started as a family trip became one of the most meaningful journeys of my life. Together with my wife and children, I returned to Ido-Ekiti, the hometown of my father, to walk the same streets and paths that shaped generations of our family. From Isape, Ido-Ekiti, where my father grew up, to the historic palace of His Royal Majesty Oba Ilori Faboro, the Olojudo of Ido-Ekiti, this journey connected us to our roots in a way I will never forget. We were honored to stay with Kabiyesi and experience the warmth, history, and culture of Ido-Ekiti firsthand as he personally guided us through important landmarks, stories, and traditions that have defined the community for generations. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, one of the most important healthcare institutions in Ekiti State. Seeing the growth of critical infrastructure and the role the hospital plays in serving communities across the region gave us a deeper appreciation for the progress being made in Ekiti and the opportunities that lie ahead. This trip was also a tribute to my grandfather, Pa Gabriel Ibitoye Familoni, whose legacy continues to impact lives decades after his passing. Sixty years after his death, we visited the church built in his honor and reflected on the enduring influence of those who came before us. Our journey continued through some of Ekiti State's most beautiful destinations, including Ikogosi Warm Springs and Ado-Ekiti, where we celebrated our baby's first birthday surrounded by family, history, and purpose. Most importantly, this visit marked the launch of EkitiKete.com — a living digital archive dedicated to preserving and showcasing the people, history, culture, tourism, events, businesses, communities, and opportunities of Ekiti State for future generations. Ekiti is more than a place on a map. It is a story, a people, a legacy, and a home worth rediscovering. If you're from Ekiti, Nigeria, or part of the African diaspora searching for your roots, I hope this video inspires you to reconnect with where your story began.
