ABOUT this concert: When he was 19, Nile Rodgers worked on Sesame Street during the day and played guitar in the house band at the Apollo Theater in Harlem at night, where he supported such names as Aretha Franklin and Parliament Funkadelic. But he wanted his own band. Together with bassist Bernard Edwards, he formed CHIC, a funk and disco band that scored a mega hit in 1978 with Le Freak. The two produced hit albums for Sister Sledge and Diana Ross, and in the eighties Rodgers worked with David Bowie, Madonna, Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, among others. His career was rocketing. Since then Rodgers has breathed new life into CHIC and a new album is expected this year. CHIC will bring thirty years of music history onto the stage at North Sea Jazz.
