I Was Robbed in Vietnam

What happened next is why I came back Street vendors flagged down strangers who spoke English. Those strangers rode us to the tourist police station on the back of their motorbikes, stayed for three hours, translated the entire police report, bought us coffee and snacks and then put us in a taxi home and paid the driver themselves. With a police report in hand and a copy of my passport saved in my email, the Canadian Embassy in Saigon issued a temporary travel document and emailed me daily updates as I traveled overland by train from Saigon to Hanoi. By the time I arrived in Hanoi my new passport was waiting. A few practical things that made all the difference: email yourself a copy of your passport, your birth certificate and your social insurance or national ID number before you travel. Have two emergency contacts who can be reached during business hours in your home country. Carry a police report for any incident that involves lost documents because hotels in Vietnam are required to record your passport details and that paper is what keeps you moving. In 2023 I brought Alan back to Vietnam and we rode motorbikes from Saigon to Hanoi. In Hanoi a car hit us. Again we were surrounded immediately by locals who took us to hospital and stayed until we were okay. Two terrible days in the same country, 15 years apart.
