Woods Point: Iconic Mountain Town - Stories beyond the scenery

Iconic Woods Point: Mountain Gold Mining Town – History & Scenery. Woods Point must be one of the most remote towns in Victoria. Is there another town which requires a minimum of about one hour’s driving on rough gravel roads to reach it from any of three directions. Set in a hollow of the Great Dividing Range, Woods Point is surrounded by lofty mountains which were once, and perhaps still are, studded with gold. The gold rush of the 1860s gave rise to a large town of 2000 to 3000 inhabitants who were courted by no less than THIRTY HOTELS! The town experienced the vagaries of surviving on gold alone with long periods of depressed income for the inhabitants. It has also survived a multitude of fires, two of which reduced the town to ashes. Today the area is a magnet for four-wheel drivers and all other recreational activities which attract visitors to the mountains. It is a must-see destination for lovers of the Australian bush and gold mining history, with an appealing touch of quirkiness. #woodspoint #goulburn #mountains #rivers #goldfield #Mining #greatdivide #australiana What to Expect: 0:00 Start 0:29 Discovery 1:16 The Point 1:30 Harry Wood 1:46 Captain Blowhard 2:01 Morning Star 2:16 Alluvial Diggings Town 2:28 Rapid growth 2:39 Collapse 3:10 1890s – A New Era 3:26 Wild West Town 3:47 Bridge Street 2003-2008 4:59 Mementoes of the past 5:11 Bush ingenuity 5:33 1865 Fire 6:14 1939 Fire 6:25 Bert Young 6:42 Panning the ashes 6:58 Rebuild 7:53 The road to Gooleys 8:19 McMillans Track 1864 8:35 Footbridge 8:46 Dusty’s Lookout 9:16 Suburbs 9:31 A Church 9:46 Movie theatre 10:01 Heck and Nell Stewart 10:15 Stewart’s Bus 10:30 Signs – Woods Point-style 10:46 A Regal picnic table 11:02 Lovers Lane 11:17 An abandoned safe 11:28 Graffiti 11:42 Brewery Creek 12:06 The Love Seat 12:16 Chimneys 12:30 Miners’ rabbit holes 12:46 2005 Store 12:57 2024 Mining office 13:11 Then c.1920, and now 13:28 Australia’s most photogenic servo 13:41 Ross’s waterwheel 14:10 The Best Bush Pub 14:41 Place of knowledge 15:01 Telephone books 15:11 Mother’s copper 15:27 Survivors 15:40 Valley of the Dead – Woods Point Cemetery 15:57 Feature: Ordinary People from Extraordinary Times 16:05 649 burials 16:18 Ralph family 16:32 O’Keefe 16:48 Duncan McLaren and family 17:03 Matteo & Madelina Marrasovich 17:17 John & Agnes Speirs 17:32 R.S.D.
