Specifically, I recommend fastening it above the third shirt button. This will give a more subtle look when wearing a jacket. I often see people fastening the tie low (near the stomach), but this is not recommended. Fastening the tie around the stomach area is probably to prevent the tie from moving, and while it's practical, from a fashion perspective... So why fasten the tie bar high up? There's a good reason for this, and it has a deep connection to the shirt collar style.
