I Tried a Japanese Childhood Hobby (Dorodango)

Dorodango - There’s a corner of the internet where people are making Dorodangos, have you heard of them? in some ways it looks simple and easy, in other ways it looks impossible, an illusion of some kind! Dorodango is a traditional Japanese pastime where earth is shaped into smooth, shiny spheres, literally "mud dumplings” in Japanese. Doro meaning mud and dango meaning dumpling or ball. Is it really possible to turn this dirt into a perfectly shiny art ball? And in all kinds of colours too? Let me share our process in this video where we enjoy connecting with nature. The art of Dorodango exemplifies the practice of patience and discipline, creating something beautiful from something so plain, looking at this dirt it sure is going to take some patience. Making coloured Dorodango – Full Tutorial. My kids thought it was wonderful that they could dig a hole in the back garden. Already processing the earth itself was bringing calm, being outdoors breathing the fresh air and connecting with nature I would strive for any day. There are videos of exact weights and volumes and adding sand too, but the traditional forms were made by kids in the playground, in true Reeves fashion we just dived in to see what happened. The dirt wanted to be nice and fine , so we precessed it with what we had to make it fine, fine is more likely to be smooth which is then more likely to be shined I figured. Evolving into hikaru dorodango…shining mud ball. I recommend you tap into your mindful state, align with your inner calm and give the art of Dorodango a try.
