I know Stage Saiki. Polished, powerful, commanding, oozing confidence, fully in control of every room she walks into. That is the Saiki I know. So when this documentary opened with who she was BEFORE all of that — genuinely shy, reserved, someone who had to work through that to get to where she is now — I had to sit with it for a second. 😤 Because I recognized it. That specific kind of shyness that comes from being around people with BIG personalities and not yet knowing how to find your place in the room. I have been that person. I am still that person in certain situations. Watching Saiki's evolution from that version of herself to THIS version — it hit differently than I expected it to and I will not pretend otherwise. And then there is the surgery. Vocal polyps removed from her vocal cords. I do not know exactly what the full medical detail was but I know what it means — she had to sit with the very real possibility that she might not be able to do the thing she loves most ever again. That kind of fear is not abstract. That is everything you have built, everything you have worked through, hanging in uncertainty. And she came back from it and became THAT. (Note: I am reacting based on what Ohrenje's documentary presents — assuming the details are accurate, which I have no reason to doubt.) Truly inspirational.
