There exist more than 33 types of blood grouping system, of these ABO and Rh system, are clinically most significant. Dr. Karl Landsteiner in 1901 identified certain glycoproteins on red blood cells membrane. Based on them blood groups were classified as A, B, AB and O. Similarly typing was done based on Rh antigen (originally identified in Rhesus monkey) as positive and negative. Based on these, human blood groups are of 8 types: A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+ and O-ve.
