Schumann: Kinderszenen, Op. 15, VII. Träumerei (Hamelin)

Schumann: Kinderszenen, Op. 15 VII. Träumerei Robert Schumann (1810–1856) Kinderszenen ("Scenes from Childhood"), Op. 15, is a cycle of thirteen short piano pieces that Schumann composed in February and March 1838, at the age of twenty-eight. He first drafted around thirty miniatures, described to Clara Wieck as "thirty small, droll things," then pared the group down: twelve were chosen and named Kinderszenen, and a thirteenth, Der Dichter spricht, was added before publication. The pieces not taken into Op. 15 surfaced later in other collections, among them Bunte Blätter, Op. 99, which this same recital also programs. The set began under the working title Kindergeschichten ("Children's Tales") and was at first intended as a supplement to the Noveletten, Op. 21; on publication it carried the subtitle "Leichte Stücke für das Pianoforte" ("Light Pieces for the Pianoforte"). It was issued by Breitkopf und Härtel of Leipzig, the first edition appearing in early 1839. The published score names no formal dedicatee. The work grew from Clara's remark that Schumann sometimes seemed to her like a child, and it is music about childhood addressed to adults rather than music for children to play; for that latter purpose Schumann later wrote the Album für die Jugend, Op. 68. The cycle moves through different keys but frames itself in G major, opening with Von fremden Ländern und Menschen and closing with Der Dichter spricht in the same key, the childhood scenes presented as recollections of "The Poet" rather than views through a child's eyes. Schumann attached the titles only after the music was written, calling them in 1840 nothing more than delicate hints for performance and interpretation. Rudolf Reti later argued for a hidden thematic unity across the set, tracing a rising sixth followed by a stepwise descent, heard at the very opening of No. 1, through many of the later pieces. One further peculiarity colors any performance: the first edition gave metronome numbers rather than Italian tempo words, and because the autograph does not survive, the disputed reading of Träumerei (printed at quarter equals 100, yet played far more slowly in the tradition descending from Clara Schumann) cannot be settled from a primary source. Träumerei ("Dreaming" or "Reverie") is the seventh and best known of the scenes, in F major, often called the emotional and literal heart of the thirteen pieces.
