On the morning of March 24th, when the air was still chilly, young people carrying large bags gathered at the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Nara Air Base in Hokkeji-cho, Nara City. This is the only Air Self-Defense Force base in the Kansai region, and it houses the Officer Candidate School, the gateway to becoming an Air Self-Defense Force officer. Yes, they are Air Self-Defense Force officer candidates. These young people, who have graduated from general universities or the National Defense Academy, enter the school and undergo approximately nine months of training before being dispersed throughout the country as leaders.
