What is a Social Suit and what would Solidarity be for Durkheim? Émile Durkheim is considered one of the founders of sociology as a scientific branch with its own method. Although Augusto Comte coined the term Sociology, it was Durkheim who formulated the rules of the sociological method and “emancipated” sociology as an autonomous science. Today I will talk about Émile Durkheim, and I invite you to subscribe to the channel, because every week I will be bringing a lot of content. Durkheim's approach consists of looking at society as a whole composed of social facts, which would be the general facts that mark society, expressed through its social rules, values and customs. Social attire goes beyond individual psychological issues and creates a collective consciousness. Society is seen as a complex organism, composed of several categories of social attire that fulfill specific purposes. In a society, we can also see that there are forms of cohesion. Society remains cohesive and does not fall apart due to solidarity, which would be the relationships and bonds between people. Solidarity would be the bonds that promote the connection between people in a society, and which is effective through mechanisms of social control. The objective of social control is to ensure solidarity, preventing acts that are contrary to society from occurring or that do not lead to retaliation. Social control integrates social facts into the whole, through instruments such as morality, religion and law. Law is one of the instruments of social control. Legal norms create standards of behavior that are desirable in society and their sanctions are applied, by the Judiciary, to those who deviate from these standards. Simpler societies tend to have an essentially repressive law, to punish deviant behavior. More complex societies have a more restitutionary or restorative law, to repair situations. There are 2 types of solidarity: mechanical and organic. Simpler societies are held together by mechanical solidarity. Meanwhile, more complex societies have organic solidarity. These are societies marked by the deepening of the social division of labor, which means that activities are increasingly specialized.
