What is a Router? How It Actually Works

Do you know what happens inside that blinking box powering your Wi-Fi? Discover exactly what a router is and how it secretly runs your entire digital life. A router is a networking hardware device that connects two or more networks together and forwards data packets between them. Think of it as a digital dispatcher: it constantly calculates and chooses the fastest, best route for your information to travel. A common point of confusion is the difference between a modem and a router. While a modem brings the raw internet service into your home or office from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), the router takes that single connection and splits it, allowing all of your laptops, smartphones, and smart TVs to share the internet concurrently. Operating as a "Layer 3" device in the OSI model, a router manages traffic between Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) using IP addresses. Every time you stream a video or send an email, data is broken down into network packets. The router reads the destination IP address on each packet's header, checks its internal routing tables, and directs it to the correct device.
