The volcanic source — listed in the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program as GVP 250030 — sits 1,299 meters below the surface of the ocean. Advisory 2026/2 reported volcanic ash to flight level 90 (approximately 9,000 feet) moving northwest at 10 knots. Six hours later, Advisory 2026/3 reported an OBSERVED volcanic ash cloud from surface to flight level 130 (approximately 13,000 feet) moving northwest at 15 knots — a four-thousand-foot altitude upgrade and a five-knot speed upgrade in a single six-hour window. The volcano sits at a structurally complex zone — the junction of a transform fault and an oblique active seafloor-spreading segment along the northern margin of the South Bismarck plate — and is not on a classical subduction arc. This is not a Hunga Tonga 2.0 scenario. On January 15, 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano in the South Pacific produced a plume that reached 57 kilometers in altitude — into the mesosphere — rated VEI 5 to 6, and generated tsunami waves across the Pacific Ocean. The 2026 Bismarck Sea plume has reached 13,000 feet, roughly 14 times lower than Hunga Tonga's peak. No tsunami warning has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center or any national tsunami warning service for the Bismarck Sea event. The current observed energy does not match a caldera-collapse scenario. The systemic point is what submarine eruptions actually look like in their early hours — Hunga Tonga's first hours did not look like a 57-kilometer plume, they looked like a steam-and-ash advisory.
