As the final suffix – the "R" – indicates, this is a serious off-road machine. This could make this 390 an interesting bike for anyone who doesn't want to hop on a large, expensive (and heavy) XL travel enduro for TET and the like, but who also wants more comfort than what you'd find on a classic hard enduro. The wheel sizes are clearly typical off-road: 90/90-21 at the front, 140/80-18 at the rear. Mitas Enduro Trail E07+ tires are mounted on the spoked wheels. The fork (WP Apex Open Cartridge with a 43-millimeter stanchion diameter) is adjustable for rebound and compression in 30 clicks each and offers an impressive 230 millimeters of travel. The shock absorber, also a WP Apex, is adjustable for rebound and preload. It also offers 230 millimeters of travel. Due to this considerable travel, the seat height is also 870 millimeters above the ground. The brakes are equipped with a large 320 mm disc at the front, paired with a two-piston caliper. At the rear, a single-piston caliper engages a 240 mm disc. The system is supplied by Brembo subsidiary ByBre. KTM specifies the weight as 165 kg, although it remains to be determined which brake fluids were included. The KTM 390 Adventure R occupies an exceptional position when it comes to assistance systems: While many mid-range adventure bikes still don't offer lean angle assist, cornering ABS and lean angle traction control are standard here. The ABS can be switched to an off-road mode (deactivated at the rear) and possibly even deactivated completely; Traction control can also be turned off. The 390 Adventure R also features three riding modes (Street, Off-Road, Rain) and a new 5-inch TFT display with full smartphone connectivity and fresh controls on the handlebars.
