Influence and Innovation. Who Was Red Mitchell?
Red Mitchell was an innovative American jazz bassist, composer, and poet known for his lyrical playing and groundbreaking use of alternative tunings. Starting his career in the 1950s, he played with legends like Gerry Mulligan, Hampton Hawes, and Ornette Coleman. In the 1960s, he moved to Sweden, where he became a central figure in the European jazz scene. Mitchell was admired for his melodic approach, deep swing, and expressive tone, often tuning his bass in fifths to expand its harmonic range. A true original, Red Mitchell left a lasting mark on modern jazz bass playing.
