A friend once left me a comment, pointing out that in Kyoto, many temples have names that are surprisingly easy to confuse. Some differ by just a single character, some swap the order of characters, and others share the exact same name except one ends with “-ji” (temple) and the other with “-in” (temple hall). For beginners in Kyoto, this can easily cause confusion when planning trips or navigating around the city. Back when I wasn’t very familiar with Kyoto myself, I also once mistook the name of a temple and thought I had already visited it. Later, when sharing information with friends, it turned into a rather awkward situation where everyone ended up puzzled. Today, I’d like to introduce six pairs of temples in Kyoto whose names are notoriously easy to mix up.
