Roman Stolyar is a composer, pianist, and the author of the first Russian textbook on free improvisation. He is a member of the Russian Composers' Union and the International Association of Jazz Schools, as well as an honorary member of the International Society of Improvised Music. Roman has performed in the United States, Japan, China, and Europe, and collaborated with renowned improvisers, including Dominic Duvall, William Parker, and Oliver Lake. Stolyar has also taught master classes on contemporary improvisation at universities in the United States, Switzerland, France, and Italy. Roman will discuss free improvisation—its differences from other improvisational musical cultures, its form, and the principles by which it is constructed. The speaker will explain whether improvisation can be learned and how, and will also explore the basic knowledge a beginning improviser should possess.
