MARRIAGE MARKETS IN CHINA! A version of Tinder that's over a thousand years old. How do Chinese marriage markets help parents find a romantic partner for their children? ✅ Yuri Ribeiro visits Tianhe Park in Guangzhou, China. Over the past 15 years, several marriage markets have sprung up in China. Yuri Ribeiro visited marriage markets in Shanghai, Chengdu, and the one in this video in Guangzhou, where parents 'advertise' their sons and daughters in search of a suitor. Traditionally, marriages in China were arranged between two families, and often still are. In the past, young men and women who liked each other could not meet freely. Young people who placed their desires for a partner above the desires of their parents were considered immoral. The man's parents sought a future bride with the same social and financial status. It was not uncommon for parents to arrange and promise their children in marriage when they were very young, or even before they were born. A matchmaker told the Los Angeles Times: “Marriage is for parents, for society, and for future generations. It’s not about happiness or love.” In contrast to traditional China, modern Chinese women are more career-focused, and there is a pejorative term in Chinese, "sheng nü," which refers to women over 25 who are not yet married. This situation still causes concern for some parents. However, today, women have a greater chance of finding a partner than men, because during the one-child policy (1980-2010), boys were favored over girls; therefore, today there are 34 million more men than women. In their search for a husband, Chinese women generally want someone with good financial standing, who must own at least an apartment; and the second most sought-after characteristic is height. Therefore, men from lower social classes and of shorter stature generally have more difficulty finding a prospective wife. "Without the traditional family or social media, many men and women have done their searches online, where thousands of dating and marriage websites have sprung up in a sector that analysts predict is worth US$300 million a year. These sites primarily cater to China's millions of white-collar workers. But intense competition, coupled with distrust of potential partners' online claims, has spurred a growing number of singles – rich and poor – to turn to more practical matchmaking services. Today, matchmaking has become a free-for-all commercial, where marriage is often seen as an opportunity to climb the social ladder or proclaim reaching the top. Single men struggle to get on the list if they don't own a house or apartment, which in cities like Beijing are extremely expensive.
