Bruce Sterling: The Colonisation of Cyberspace
Seduced & Abandoned: The Body in the Virtual World was one of a series of ICA conferences (spanning 12-13 March in 1994) held under the umbrella title Towards the Aesthetics of the Future that explored the connections between culture, society, politics and the impact upon them of new digital processes and technologies. In this selection, Bruce Sterling, author of ‘The Hacker Crackdown’, looks at institutional attempts to control the internet. Joan Truckenbrod, lecturer in telecommunications arts at the Art Institute of Chicago, discusses the variety of forms within electronic art and examines the struggle to generate a new aesthetic that can describe this bewildering variety.
