Durban was once one of the most beautiful cities in South Africa. Warm beaches. World class coastline. Thriving industry. A place families were proud to call home. Today that same city is collapsing under corruption, mismanagement and political decay. While sewage pours into rivers and oceans, while 60 percent of the city’s water is wasted through broken infrastructure, while 600 informal settlements grow with no plan and no hope, the leadership spent 22 million rand on a statue instead of fixing the basics. Four years ago the Auditor General warned of 700 million rand in irregular expenditure. Four years later that number exploded to 4 billion rand lost stolen wasted with nothing to show for it. Durban’s airport is failing. Businesses are fleeing. Tourists have vanished. Even the Metro Police have lost hope as crime surges and leadership collapses. For 30 years communities were promised a better life. Instead they watched politicians enrich themselves while the city fell apart. Many loyal ANC supporters now openly say the truth the promises were lies and their lives never improved. But this election is different. Durban has one last chance. One last window to pull the city back from the brink. One last opportunity to choose competence over chaos and service delivery over slogans. This conversation exposes exactly what happened why Durban declined who failed the city and what it will take to rebuild it. Because if Durban doesn’t get 51 percent to remove the corrupt networks that brought it to its knees the destruction will continue for another generation.
