Grumman's Bizarre Noseless Fighter Design: Grumman XF5F Skyrocket

In this video, we take a look at the Grumman XF5F Skyrocket, a carrier-based fighter and interceptor from early-to-mid World War II. We first talk about the idea of military innovation, and how new technology that seems to be incredible or revolutionary can be impractical and end up failing, using the DARPA RWT as an example. We then move over to the US Navy in WWII, in their effort to increase the speed of carrier-based fighters. We talk about the Navy's perception of how technology would evolve, and how that led to Grumman's XF5F design. We then talk about the Skyrocket design, with its unique and bizarre-looking wing-first design. We talk about why this was done, how the design evolved in its earliest stages, and how its initial performance was both promising and disappointing.
