무여스님과 함께 하는 사찰여행 – 도리사(경북 구미), Dorisa Temple
We have come to Dorisa Temple on Mt. Taejo, the sacred site of the first Buddhist temple in Korea, which served as the center of Buddhist culture and a holy temple where Silla Buddhism took root. Dorisa Temple was first established in Silla by the Goguryeo monk Ado Hwasang in the 19th year of King Nulji's reign (417). While searching for a place to practice asceticism, Ado Hwasang saw peach and plum blossoms in full bloom here even in winter. Recognizing it as an auspicious site, he built the temple. It is said that the name Dorisa was formed by incorporating the characters for peach (桃) and plum (李). Ado Hwasang was a man from Goguryeo who came to Silla to spread the Dharma. It is said that at that time, Silla was exclusive, and the persecution of Buddhism was severe. It is said that Ado Hwasang, under the name Mukhoja, helped out by working at the house of the wealthy merchant Morye during the day and gathered people at night to preach the Dharma. Afterward, Morye Hwasang donated all his wealth, contributing to Ado Hwasang's establishment of Dorisa Temple. It is said that Monk Ado entered Geumsu Cave and attained Nirvana after practicing asceticism at Dorisa Temple. Since a stupa enshrining the Buddha's true relics stands at the temple where Buddhism was first introduced to Silla, I felt as if I had traveled back to the Silla era in a time machine. The stillness and silence of Jeokmyeolbogung cleared my mind, allowing me to feel a sense of stability and peace within it. Dorisa Temple, which first introduced Buddhism to Silla, is a quiet and beautiful mountain temple where Monk Ado's earnest devotion to seeking enlightenment and spreading the Dharma remains in every corner. For centuries, it has stood in the same spot, silently conveying the teaching that the true nature of every person's mind is none other than the mind of the Buddha. Why not visit Dorisa Temple in Gumi this beautiful spring when flowers bloom and spend some clear and peaceful time there? * Gumi Dorisa Temple Information Address: 526, Dorisa-ro, Haepyeong-myeon, Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do Phone Number: 054-474-3737 I am Buddhist monk, Moo Yeo.
