In essence, it means that everyone starts from ignorance of Buddhism, from complete ignorance of the Dharma, gradually progressing to hearing about it and realizing, "Oh, I know there is such a Dharma." Gradually, they realize, "The Dharma I've learned is quite good; I've started cultivating my mind and practicing the Dharma." Practicing the Dharma actually means starting to observe the precepts and follow them. This is called "seeing the path and practicing the path." What does "seeing the path and practicing the path" mean? It means that after studying and reciting scriptures, you will feel that your prayers are answered; you've seen the path. So, in the world today, we often say, "Have you seen it?" It's not just about seeing with your eyes. From a Buddhist perspective, "seeing the path" means you've actually seen the path. Then comes practicing the path. "I've seen it; I know it's effective; I've decided to continue practicing." From ignorance to hearing the Dharma, to cultivating the mind and practicing the Dharma, to seeing the path and practicing the path, and finally, consistently cultivating the mind. Therefore, it's very important for a person to cultivate their mind and persevere. When one cultivates to the point where their spirit is exceptionally good, they become increasingly simple, kind, and compassionate—that's called returning to one's true nature. Do you like talking to children? Do you have to use your brain when talking to them? No, right? "Where did Mom go?" "Mom went out." They won't boast. The ultimate goal of cultivating the mind is to return to one's true nature, to be pure and have nothing to hide from others. When a person cultivates to a very simple and honest state, they are actually very happy. Look at you, at work all day, many people say, "I'm tired, but I relax when I get home." Because at work it's all fake. Talking to this person, "I have to be careful with my boss." Talking to this person, "This person is jealous of me, I have to be careful with my words." Talking to this person, "They're always trying to mess with me, I have to be careful with that too." This person, "I have to be nice to them." Your mind is constantly switching between these thoughts—it's exhausting! Children in kindergarten are all so simple and happy—that's returning to one's true nature. This person will become quiet and still because they have no distracting thoughts. Children without distracting thoughts are especially quiet. You need to learn to perceive the emptiness of the five aggregates. What does it mean to perceive the emptiness of the five aggregates? It actually means not to think too much. These aggregates of thought, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are all products of thought. The more you think about some things, the more afraid you become; the more you think about others, the more upset you become. Some things will never actually happen to this extent. Why are you so afraid? It's because of what you've imagined. I once counseled a young man who dealt with immigration agents. One agent cheated him out of money. He told me that he couldn't hold back anymore and said, "If you keep doing this, I'm going to sue you." The agent, upon hearing this, simply said, "Go ahead and sue me. Just be careful when you go out." He told me that ever since that agent said that, he wasn't just careful when he went out; he was terrified. He was afraid that someone would find someone to beat him up because someone had told him to be careful. Therefore, many things, including the aggregates of thought and consciousness, all exist within the consciousness. If you feel that someone will treat you badly, your expression will reflect that badness; if you feel that someone will treat you well, your expression will convey kindness and friendliness. This is actually a person's aggregates. That's why Bodhisattvas teach us to perceive the emptiness of the five aggregates. Don't think about them. Don't think your wife will treat you badly, don't think your husband will treat you badly, then you won't fear the breakdown of your family. What is there to think about? Everything is empty. If someone truly wants to leave you, they will eventually leave. If they don't want to leave you, no matter what you think, they won't leave you. Why think so much? Therefore, the five aggregates are connected to Buddha-nature: form, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness. If you connect th...
