Descriptive Statistics for A Level Psychology (& research methods practice)
The Handouts including the PowerPoint, questions and answers on descriptive statistics and other research methods covered in the video are here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource... 1. Identify the IV and DV (2) 2. Why did the students write a directional hypothesis? (1) 3. Identify the experimental design (1) 4. Describe counterbalancing and explain why the participants could not use counterbalancing for this experiment (4) 5. Identify the sampling technique and describe one advantage of this technique (2) 6. Calculate the median for both conditions of the IV (6) 7. Describe one advantage of using the median (1) 8. Calculate the mean for both conditions of the IV (6) 9. Describe one disadvantage of the using the mean (1) 10. Identify the mode in both condition of the IV (2) 11. Describe one disadvantage of the using the mode (1) 12. Calculate the range for both conditions of the IV (4) 13. Describe one advantage of using the range (1) 14. Fill in the gaps in the table: (2) Before practice After practice Mean Standard Deviation 20.68 4.67 15. What does the table suggest about the participant’s ability to draw between concentric stars using only their reflection in a mirror? (4) 16. Identify and justify the appropriate inferential statistical test (4) 17. The psychology students noticed that the female participants displayed many non-verbal behaviours (eg facial expressions, fidgeting and laughing) while performing the difficult task of drawing between the lines of the concentric stars compared to the male participants. Design an observation study to investigate sex differences in non-verbal behaviours of males and females when they are performing a novel difficult task. In your answer you should provide details of: type of observation with justification operationalised behavioural categories and how the data will be recorded ethical considerations of the investigation how reliability of data collection could be assessed.
