Making A Hornet Puppet
East Hartford High School's mascot is a hornet, named for the Pratt and Whitney "Hornet" engine. This hornet puppet is a type of hand puppet. We see how it was made in this video. I started with a plasticine clay head sculpture from which I made a mold and poured casts of neoprene, a type of latex product. The body is a black sock inside a "costume" of black and yellow fabric. The head is sewn on to the sock, wings are added, and an elastic keeps the body on the wrist of the puppeteer. The puppeteer could also wear a black glove sewn onto the hornet body, which would show the fingers as legs of the hornet.
