Watching Baby on the Observation Camera

While the rainy season has ended and we are in the early dry season, we got an unseasonably cool storm today that not only provided appreciated moisture but also dropped the temperature. Although our wet caregivers aren’t quite rejoicing, this has been no big deal to Baby, who is used to living in much colder climates for part of the year than what we experience in Mato Grosso. She showed no outward signs of having a chill at all. When the care staff went up to the kitchen for lunch, they checked on all of the girls via the observation camera while she lounged in the barn. There’s not much that can be said about Baby that she isn’t plainly demonstrating herself. She’s relaxed, silly, and seems to have found joy in a simple dirt pile. First, she lies down for a moment, but begins to rock back and forth, eventually just getting so cheeky as to smush her face in the dirt. All of this behavior indicates that she’s relaxing more and finding comfort in some of the new things around her. Although the barn is open so she can go into the habitat whenever she wants, it still acts as a safe space for her, and it’s okay for her to have touchstones she can return to if she feels uncertain–but that is already shifting with every day.
