Eski Başbakan Tansu Çiller 28 Şubat sürecini anlattı

Known in Turkish political history as the "postmodern coup," the February 28th coup led to the resignation of then-Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, was claimed to last a thousand years, and was touted as "a rebalancing of democracy." Despite the 24 years that have passed since the February 28th coup, the social, political, and legal impacts it inflicted remain fresh in our minds. Then-Deputy Prime Minister Tansu Çiller, assessing the period leading up to February 28th for an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter, recalled that economic hardship and terrorism had escalated towards the end of 1995. He stated that the media, which he described as a "cartel," and the business community, uneasy about the Customs Union, had formed a clique against him. Former Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Tansu Çiller, commenting on the events surrounding the February 28th coup, said, "Messages began to be sent saying, 'The army is standing.' The threats reached such a pitch that my family was a target. I said, 'Do whatever you want to me, I'm in my pocket.'"
