What does the Bible say about clothing? This topical issue, in light of the Scriptures, is explored by the Bible teacher from Israel, Rashit Shomer. "Speak to all the wise-hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they make garments for Aaron to consecrate him, that he may minister to Me in the priesthood. These are the garments they shall make: a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, a tunic, a mitre, and a sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and for his sons, that he may minister to Me in the priesthood." /Exodus 28:3-4/ The consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests to God was accompanied by their dressing in specific garments. These two verses emphasize the connection between Aaron's priestly consecration and clothing. According to Moses' command, craftsmen were to make "garments for Aaron to consecrate him, that he may minister to Me in the priesthood" (v. 3). The same idea is repeated again: "Let them make holy garments for Aaron your brother and for his sons, that he may minister to Me in the priestly office" (v. 4). The Lord thus says that in order for Aaron to be His priest, priestly garments must be made for Aaron. In God's eyes, this is so important that He deemed it necessary to repeat it twice. Why does the Lord attach such importance to clothing? Why does Holy Scripture repeatedly mention clothing? And why do those who claim that the Omniscient God is unconcerned with clothing demonstrate that their thinking and reasoning are unbiblical? The first time in human history that clothing is mentioned is after our first parents sinned: they "sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons" (Gen. 3:7). But God deemed such "garment" insufficient and clothed the sinning Adam and Eve in garments of skins. The word "nakedness" in Holy Scripture always carries a negative connotation. Humans instinctively strive to cover their nakedness. Conversely, to expose themselves in someone's presence requires an effort. When a person succeeds in breaking down the inner spiritual barriers with which the Creator has endowed them, they become a fellow member of a secular community that demands submission to a different viewpoint than the Bible regarding nakedness. The "prince of this world" attaches no less importance to clothing than God. Fashion is a fickle thing. However, over time, a consistent trend toward gradual undressing and mingling can be discerned. This trend has an invisible author. The Gospel says of one of the demon-possessed men from Gadaria: "Now when He (Jesus) came ashore, a certain man from the city, possessed by demons for a long time, met Him and had no clothes on…" (Luke 8:27). But when Christ cast the evil spirits out of this man, people who came from the city to see what was happening "found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at Jesus' feet, clothed and in his right mind" (v. 35). This man, who was under complete demonic control, had not been wearing clothes. But when he was delivered, the people saw a clear change in him: they found him clothed and in his right mind. So, God clothes, and Satan undresses. The greater the devil's influence over a person, the more it can be reflected in the amount of clothing they wear. Clothing is also a kind of language through which a person expresses themselves: what social group, gender, nationality, profession they belong to, what values ​​they adhere to, what or whom they are influenced by, their spiritual state, their wealth, and so on. A person's character can also be judged by their clothing. Although, in all of this, mistakes can be made. Judging by someone's clothing, we might assume they're a man, but it turns out they're a woman; that they're poor, but they're wealthy; that they work at McDonald's, but their son actually works there; that they love rock music, but it turns out they just work at Metal Repair and don't listen to heavy metal; we think this woman is a prostitute, but it turns out it's just a fashion fad that dictates all women dress that way; we think they're Scottish, but they're..., and so on. Clothing has a spiritual side. This is precisely why both God and Satan attach great importance to clothing. If God created clothing primarily to cover nakedness, then Satan, if he can't strip a person of clothing, will try to transform it into something that accentuates it. The Spirit of God calls us to be discerning in what and how we dress. We bear the responsibility of not being a stumbling block to those around us (Matthew 18:6).
