The Norwich City Walls -Unseen Sections -Inside Black Tower which Imprisoned Plague Sufferers 1600s!
Completed in the mid 14th century Norwich’s city walls formed the longest circuit of urban defences in Britain. Originally including 40 towers with Cow Tower added in 1398-99. After a breach of the wall occurring during Kett’s Rebellion in 1549 the defensive barrier enclosing the city began to be seen as an outdated form of defence with some arguing it was becoming a health hazard. In subsequent centuries Norwich citizens became reluctant to continue funding the maintenance of the wall with invasive vegetation and vandalism mounting up the cost of the preservation. In 1793/94 most of the gateways were demolished to help encourage trade and during the 20th century advancements in public transport and the importance of road links caused further parts of the wall to be lost. Now only a handful of towers remain including the spectacular Black Tower at Carrow Hill. Black Tower was traditionally the residence of the city constable before being used to house plague victims in the 17th century. Bubonic Plague struck Norwich badly with four deadly outbreaks in 1579, 1603, 1625 & 1665. In 1625 Black Tower was made into a prison for 'unruly, infected persons.' The city council paid watchmen to ensure that those housed here didn't break lockdown. Pest Houses such as the Black Tower were utilised in attempts to stop the spread. Watch to see exclusive footage inside Black Tower (with the crumbling spiral staircase still in tact) and an exploration of the ruined Western Boom Tower by the River Wensum which contains an original 18th century beehive coking oven. The Boom Towers marked the spot where the city walls crossed the river with Devil's Tower to the east. An iron chain was strung between the towers preventing unauthorised entry of ships. 00:00 to 09:01 Music provided by HearWeGo (https://goo.gl/nDS3zR) Artist: Fotiz Liberis Title: Broken Listen on YouTube: • Fotiz Liberis - Broken 09:01 to 11:21 Music provided by HearWeGo (https://goo.g|/nDS3zR) Artist: Fotiz Liberis Title: Starry Sky Listen on YouTube: • Fotiz Liberis - Starry Sky 11:21 to 15:55 Music provided by HearWeGo (https://goo.g|/nDS3zR) Artist: Fotiz Liberis Title: Northern Lights Listen on YouTube: • Fotiz Liberis - Northern Lights #norwich #citywalk #hauntedandabandonednorfolk https://www.hauntedandabandonednorfol...
