The Book Genesis 6 Doesn't Tell You About

Open your Bible to Genesis chapter 6. You'll find one of the strangest passages in any sacred text in any tradition anywhere on earth. Four verses. Sixty-eight words in the Hebrew. They mention angels who took human wives. They mention giants who walked the earth. They name a category of beings called the Gibborim — the mighty men, the men of renown. And then the passage ends. There is no explanation. No description. No story of how it began or how it ended. The entire account of the angels, the wives, the giants, and the corruption that necessitated the destruction of the world is compressed into four verses and abandoned. This has unsettled biblical scholars for two thousand years. Because the four verses are clearly referring to a story. The Hebrew text reads as though the original audience already knew the rest. The names are dropped without introduction. The events are described as common knowledge. The passage feels like a summary — a footnote pointing to a much larger document the reader was expected to have already read. That document exists. It contains 108 chapters. It tells the complete story Genesis 6 only summarizes — the names of the angels, the mountain where they descended, the oaths they swore, the knowledge they taught humanity, the giants they fathered, and the judgment that ended them. It was preserved at Qumran. It was quoted by the apostles. It was cited as scripture by the early church fathers. And it has been kept, in full, in the Ethiopian Orthodox biblical canon for two thousand years. It is called the Book of the Watchers.
