Disturbi dell’alimentazione: gli sviluppi più recenti della CBT-E
Webinar with Riccardo Dalle Grave and Gabriele Melli Ahead of the 10th International Online Congress on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, scheduled for May 13–15, 2021, we review the latest developments in CBT-E, partly accelerated by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The treatment options offered to patients with eating disorders largely depend on the judgment and training of therapists and available resources. Over the past decade, a new form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), derived from CBT for bulimia nervosa, called CBT-E ("enhanced"), was developed by Christopher Fairburn and colleagues at the CREDO Center at the University of Oxford. Its goal is to treat the psychopathology of adult eating disorders rather than individual diagnostic categories (e.g., anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa). The treatment was subsequently adapted by Dalle Grave and colleagues in Verona for the treatment of eating disorders in adolescents and for intensive care. The efficacy of CBT-E has been evaluated in numerous trials, and it is now the only psychological treatment recommended by NICE guidelines for all eating disorders in both adults and adolescents. The most recent developments in CBT-E, partly accelerated by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, include its adaptation for remote delivery, the development of psychoeducational videos for families and patients, digital CBT-E (undergoing evaluation in a trial in Oxford), the management of complex cases with psychiatric and medical comorbidities, and its integration with CBT for obesity to treat obesity-associated binge-eating disorder. We discuss this with: Riccardo Delle Grave, who graduated in medicine and surgery, specialized in endocrinology and nutritional science, and finally obtained his license to practice psychotherapy after specializing at the Association of Cognitive Psychology in Rome. He is head of the nutritional rehabilitation unit at the Villa Garda nursing home, where, in collaboration with Professor Christopher Fairburn of the CREDO Center at the University of Oxford, he developed an inpatient treatment for eating disorders based entirely on enhanced cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E). Gabriele Melli, Psychologist, Psychotherapist. President of the Institute of Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology and Psychotherapy (IPSICO, Florence), a four-year school of psychotherapy recognized by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, where he also practices clinically. National Secretary of CBT-Italy – Italian Society of Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy. President of the Italian Association for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (AIDOC). Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorder and of the Scientific Editor of the Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapy. Lecturer at numerous MIUR-recognized Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapy Specialization Schools.
