Kicking back in Serbia's heartland at Novi Sad

Novi Sad's laid-back vibe and storied heritage shines through in Serbia. I begin a visit to Serbia in Novi Sad, the country’s second largest city (population 500,000) and its fastest-growing. Like Bratislava in Slovakia and Budapest in Hungary, Novi Sad is on the Danube River. But motorboats far outnumber cruise vessels here. Novi Sad isn’t an overly touristic city—although it possesses plenty of charm—which is one reason I’ve come here. It’s known for its relaxed atmosphere, historic architecture and cultural heritage, having once been—before the emergence of Belgrade—Serbia’s most important and influential city. As the video shows, Novi Sad's glory still shines in its impressive old quarter, where the stately City Hall continues to double as the capitol of Serbia’s historically autonomous region of Vojvodina (pronounced vaaj-vuh-DEE-nuh).
